Chandler Harris

I   sit

and   watch

the   other   kids

with   their  books

never   looking  up

laughing  at  the funny  parts

turning  the  pages

I put my head down

pretending

I watch and wonder

if anyone can tell

tick tock

that the letters on the page mean

nothing

like a path with no

ending

I try to

but

letters don’t

form into words

words are not found

tick tock

I see

a hand bouncing a ball

faster and faster

a swirly gig inside the ball

opposites

red   green

blue  orange

yellow

faster brighter

getting hot

turning pages

heart beating

feeling alone

wanting so badly

wishing

I could read.
